Oh my dang. That is bad news indeed.
Feels like someone kicked me in the nuts. Curt took down his Facebook page earlier today too. Probably a good thing; it would have been full of trolls and shit. Sad sad day. It was the game I originally started Tenacious for. Tenacious was founded on this company and this game. And now it will never see the light of day.
Very disappointing =( I really thought Amalur did a lot better than it apparently did - 330k copies isn't enough to pay for it's development. I has a sad.
Well at least there is always this coming...
Heh. I don't even have the heart to derail this thread yet. I just wish this was a big joke.
Was now bout to post this, yeah def sad. Hopefully all those who are no unemployed find a new home soon. Best wishes to the team.
I know Trion and the GW2 team are already offering interviews to many of those from the 38 team. Turbine also just moved into RI and are holding interviews. I think most of them will find new jobs soon but I know most of them want to see all their hard work in Amalur come to life. 6 years of creating and now all their hard work is for naught. Just sad sad stuff.
We can always hope someone else will pick up the IP and work in progress and run with it. Granted, that usually turns out horribly, but...I wouldn't be at all surprised if we see at least the concepts from the 38 games used in other things in the near future.
Hope the team finds places amongst the Guild Wars 2 crowd.
Apparently there is a big list of 122 different studios/companies that are willing to take in some of the people from 38 studios that lost their jobs. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1b8Gf2wud3OB_IgcypevqNF4MENhivccu2lKWceO-cUI/edit
Found this on another site:
This is the next game on my wish list. I be hopin it comes out soon for us, yarrr!
This is pretty creepy.
back to swtor... weeeee
There are over 120 companies offering over 2000 different positions to the guys from 38 studios that lost their jobs, with at least 20 more companies joining the list soon too. Hopefully everyone from 38 can find new jobs with some of those companies.
Curt just posted more pictures of the world.
Wow those are nice, they need to find a way to get back in business!
God damn it...they keep posting shit like that without telling us someone's picking things up I'm gonna cry=(
Maybe we can sacrifice Blizzard and bring them back.
I'll go find the ceremonial knife and prepare a summoning circle...need to dig up some of my old druidic tomes...you guys go find Bashiok and Curt Shilling, I think we'll need to do some kind of spirit transfer...
There was a great article todday about how they are getting alot of offers as the game design community is really behind these out of work guys and gals. Curt really did grab the best of the best in game design. I don't expect them to be unemployed long.
kind of depressing.
so what happens to the game they've made so far?
Sounds like the entire franchise and everything that 38 Studios/Big Huge Games ever created now belongs to the state of Rhode Island.
There are rumors going around that Curt might be able to finish the game eventually, but I'm not sure if I missed something where he still owns the game or it is just wishful thinking.
He still owns the rights. While the company did borrow $75 million dollars, the initial $35 million dollars to start the company, copyright the game and begin development was Curt's personal money, his life savings.
Hopefully it really will get released some day then!
I just ask my self: How much does is cost to make a video game?
The first link I follow is:
Which says that making a game should cost between 20 and 100M.
And, 100M would only be for a very extensive MMO.
So, I then ask my self: How could they not have made at least a beta of Copernicus if indeed they spent 110M on it?
Something is fishy here.
Agreed, you only put in 100M into a game if its that triple A title that you KNOW is going to succeed, a very successful franchises etc. That sum is crazy...
Hmmm, did any of that money go towards kingdom of amalur or the non mmo sequel hey had been working on?
I have heard that the loan was only actually for $75million and they didn't get a big chunk of it since they didnt hire enough employees, but it for some reason cost rhode island the $112 million when 38 defaulted on it.
$200 million into SWTOR ... didn't help
The killer of all MMO's is releasing them before they are finished
That's on eof 2 killers of MMOs. It's certainly the fastest one; the second biggest is lack of variety. It's been a long, long time since we've seen a game where you had more than one option as to how to level up, what path to take, etc. for a given faction. People are getting really tired of it; I hope we see something different soon.
Paradigm, you are so quick to defend him that I'm wondering what your relationship is to Mr Shilling.
Partial to humble athletes that play the game right, and basically better than everyone else. What's not to admire about someone willing to risk everything they have on a dream?
I subscribe to the notion that it's better to live rich than die rich ...
